Air France offers departures from many UK airports via its hub in Paris, as do Lufthansa via Frankfurt. Iberia has London departures through Madrid. Connecting flights take upwards of around 14 hours.

You can also connect via the USA and Canada through cities such as New York, Miami, Atlanta and Toronto with United, American Airlines, Delta and Air Canada.

All airports in Colombia are served by local buses and taxis. Bus services are the cheapest option but will take longer to reach your final destination. Taxis are a good way to get around. Either agree upon a price or make sure the meter is on. Have a few small Colombian peso notes available when you arrive. For reference, 20,000 pesos is around £6.50.

You should also check with your hotel, as many offer shuttle transfers for free or for a small charge. It’s worth taking this option if this is your first time in the country.

Car hire in Colombia is another option for getting around with ease. Car-rental offices are located at many of the airports for collection upon arrival. Road conditions and other drivers are two of the main hazards of driving here, so extreme caution must be used.

As the capital, Bogota is awash with all kinds of hotels. The skyline of this dazzling city is made up of skyscrapers and historic buildings; at their feet chaotic streets and peaceful open spaces, at their back, mountains including the mighty Monserrate, which soars to over 3,000 metres.

In the main downtown areas of Bogota, where business folk, locals and tourists mill around, there’s a good range of hotels. Prices are reasonable, though they’re generally higher than elsewhere in Colombia.

The northern airports at Cartagena and Barranquilla deliver passengers to the beaches of the celebrated Caribbean coast. Wherever you find a perfect beach, you’ll discover a clutch of hotels. Prices vary hugely on the coast, where budget beach lodges can be found next to sprawling five-star resorts.
